GRASAG-KNUST engages Education Minister Honorable Haruna Iddrisu on issues pertaining to postgraduate education

The leadership of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (GRASAG-KNUST), led by the President, Mr. Yussif Suleman, together with members of the Executive Committee, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, as part of the Association’s stakeholder engagement efforts aimed at strengthening institutional relationships and advancing postgraduate education and research in Ghana.

During the engagement, the leadership of GRASAG-KNUST highlighted key concerns affecting postgraduate students, particularly accommodation challenges and inadequate research funding support. The Association appealed for stronger government intervention to improve postgraduate accommodation infrastructure and enhance funding opportunities for graduate research.

The President further briefed the Minister on the GRASAG Research Fund, which has supported between 60 and 80 postgraduate students over the years, and appealed for support to expand the initiative to benefit more graduate researchers. The delegation also informed the Minister about plans to organise a Postgraduate Research Conference in the coming semester.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu reaffirmed government’s commitment to expanding infrastructure at KNUST to support academic growth and maintain the quality of graduates produced by the University.

The Minister further disclosed that the KNUST Teaching Hospital is expected to be commissioned by December 2026, indicating that funding and procurement processes for the project are already in place. He commended the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, and suggested that she be given the honour of commissioning the facility.

Although the interaction was brief due to a scheduled Cabinet meeting, the Minister took the opportunity to advise the student leaders on leadership, governance, integrity, and collaboration. He urged them to prioritise long-term impact over short-term gains and encouraged humility and maturity in leadership.

GRASAG-KNUST remains committed to advocating for the welfare, academic advancement, and research development of graduate students while fostering constructive engagement with key stakeholders.
